To purchase a weapon in New York, you must first be authorized by the NYC Department of Licensing by completing the authorization form required to purchase a weapon. Once your request has been approved, you will be able to purchase weapons from any licensed gun store. After purchasing a weapon, you must return with it to the Licensing Department to enter the data about the weapon (production, model, serial number) in your license to carry a weapon. If you do not already have a license to carry a weapon, you will first need to fill out a license application and submit it along with the required fee to the Licensing Department in order to obtain a permit and authorization to purchase a weapon.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Application for a License to Carry a Weapon

1. 1 Take the application form to fill out. It can be obtained both from the Licensing Department and downloaded electronically from the Internet.
   • In the first case, you must contact the Department of Licensing at 1 Police Plaza, Room 110, New York City, NY 10038.
   • In the second, you need to go to the official website of the State of New York, the link to which is given in the sources for this article, then go to the Permits tab and select Handgun Licensing Forms there on the left.

2. 2 Complete an application for a license to carry a weapon.
   • Fill out the application using a typewriter, on a computer or use an electronic form on the Internet. The Licensing Department does not accept handwritten applications.
   • Fill out section A. In section A, you must enter personal information: name, address, social security number, contact information, date of birth, physical characteristics and signs, as well as information about the place of work.
   • Complete Section B. Section B contains a set of questions about your criminal record, alcohol and drug abuse, involvement in domestic violence, mental health problems, disability, if any.
   • Provide data on places of residence and work for the last 5 years. The Licensing Department uses this information during background checks.
   • If you plan to carry a weapon with you, write a letter of necessity. In this part of the statement, it is necessary to explain in detail why you want to carry a weapon with you in New York.
3. 3 Apply with the application to the notary. It is your responsibility to date and sign each section of the application in the presence of a notary.
   • Notary services can be provided by banks or any government agency. Services may require payment.
4. 4 Collect the amount required for licensing. The licensing fee is $ 340 (€ 248) and there is also a $ 94 25 cents (€ 69) fee for fingerprinting.

Method 2 of 2: Authorizing to Acquire Weapons

2. 2 Fill out the authorization form in order to purchase a weapon. The Licensing Department will then review your application to purchase the weapon. If approved, you can purchase weapons from any licensed distributor.

3. 3 Submit the new weapon to the Licensing Department within 72 hours. The Licensing Department will then update your license with information about the new weapon, including place of manufacture, model and serial number.
